Tip of the Week 49 – 2019 – statistics

The last meeting of the year is coming up. Paul and Sophie will be talking and hearing about annual reports, so they prepare for the meeting with Tip #49: skills – describing statistics.

When we talk about trends and statistics we mostly talk about finished events in the past and also what is still relevant today.  See the chart below and note the use of the past simple and present perfect. 

Verbs
to increase                               to decrease                                         to remain stable                         to fluctuate

to go up                                    to go down                                           to remain constant

to rise                                       to drop

to grow                                     to fall

e.g.    Profits increased from 2001 to 2011.

Nouns
the increase                              the decrease                            the stability                               the fluctuation

the rise                                     the drop
the growth                                the fall

e.g.    There was an increase in sales from 2001 to 2011.

We use adjectives to give more information about the nouns and adverbs to give more information about the verbs. 

Adjectives
There was a strong increase in sales last month.

Adverbs
Sales increased strongly last month.
