Passive Voice for Processes (Tip of the Week 14)

Englisch Vokabeln und Grammatik PS E-Learniing

We use the active voice to describe what somebody does, e.g.

Mr Smith takes the parts box to the production line every hour. (singular)

subject = Mr Smith

verb = takes

object = the box (singular) / the boxes (plural)

We use the passive voice to describe what happens to the object (the box), e.g. The parts box is taken to the production line every hour

We can use the passive in two forms – singular & plural:

The parts box is taken to the production line every hour. (singular)

The parts boxes are taken to the production line every hour. (plural)

We make the passive in the present simple with

to be (is/are) + past participle (taken)
