Past Simple

The past simple is used to describe fully completed events in the past. We often use a time indicator (e.g. yesterday, last year, in 2014 etc.) but we don’t always have to mention it – important is that the context must be about this past time.

Form

To build the past form of regular verbs, –ed is simply added to the infinitive:

work – worked.  Irregular verbs are different and have to be learned.

For questions and negatives we use the past simple form of the verb ‘to do’.

Positives

I worked yesterday

You worked yesterday

He/She/It worked yesterday

We worked yesterday

You worked yesterday

They worked yesterday

Negatives

I did not work yesterday

You did not work yesterday

He/She/It did not work yesterday

We did not work yesterday

You did not work yesterday

They did not work yesterday

Questions

Did I work yesterday?

Did you work yesterday?

Did he/she/it work yesterday?

Did we work yesterday?

Did you work yesterday?

Did they work yesterday?
